Sleep disorders constitute a major health problem in the United States today. The most common sleep condition is sleep apnea, though other conditions are of equal importance, such as insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, disorders of the sleep/wake cycle, and REM behavior discorder.
The proper approach to a patient with sleep disorders is a medical evaluation by trained sleep professionals, starting with a history and physical, followed by appropriate testing, which often includes an attended polysomnography study. Therapy is coordinated by the sleep medicine team of doctors, polysomnography technicians, and nurses, working with the patients and directing patients to the appropriate interventions. Drawing on the support of subspecialists in otorhinolaryngology, neurology, psychiatry, cardiology, gastroenterology, and dentistry, the patient is guided through his/her treatment plan.
The Central Jersey Sleep Disorders Center maintains it own accredited, state of the art, computerized sleep disorders laboratories, staffed by highly motivated, compassionate, and trained polysomnography technicians. Full polysomnography testing is performed in accordance with guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Crucial to proper treatment of patients with sleep disorders is follow-up care. The Central Jersey Sleep Disorders Center runs it Sleep Clinic during regular office hours in both its East Brunswick and Somerset offices. Patients are seen by the sleep physicians along with experienced polysomnography technicians, nurses, and physician assistants for patient evalutions, follow up adjustments of CPAP, and review of therapy. Appointments are conveniently scheduled to accommodate patient preferences, and the needs of the particular patient.
